The FDR Drive and World War II

Though it’s easy to assume that the FDR Drive was built on rubble from around New York City, the actual source of fill for the necessary land reclamation was the enormous quantities of rubble brought from England in ships as ballast as they travelled empty to New York to pick up goods.
