HBO’s original series GIRLS premiered its fifth and possibly last season last month. It’s written, produced, and stars Lena Dunham. Only half an hour long, GIRLS is the kind of show where every episode leaves me wanting more. This show is not for everyone. It’s raw- nothing is off limits and sometimes you don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Season five so far, no different from the other seasons, has been engrossing and hilarious. (Although many may disagree.) The show follows the lives of four girls in their twenties focusing on their relationships with each other and their careers. This is not your typical “high school scene and coming to age” with unrealistic problems and unrealistic reactions. However, we do see the girls struggle to figure out what kind of life they want to live including what careers they want to pursue, how they want to present themselves, and what kind of relationships they want. The four friends are extremely different from each other which is something that I think makes this show so special from the usual girlfriends who all have the same hairstyle and same interests. In addition, in no way do we see how perfect the girls are and how they’re always there for each other. Instead of that, we see how everyone can be selfish at times and that more times than the rest we can think we’re right but be wrong. Overall, GIRLS is an amazing show that we all connect to in one way or another.
