The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Arch

The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ arch at Grand Army Plaza is almost always visible to pedestrians walking through the area, but there is little information provided at the site as to this monument’s history. The arch itself was designed in 1889 by John H. Duncan, built by Samuel Parsons, Calvert Vaux, and Stanford White, and the structure was completed by about 1898. However, at this stage the arch was far from complete. In subsequent years until 1901, sculptures were added on the front and interior that completed the arch as we know it today.
