Has NYC Peaked?

Do we still have the right to call call New York City the heart of culture and art in the world? Of corse Broadway is still every playwright’s ultimate goal, New York Fashion Week is still the most important week of the year, for many, and we still have the MET and MoMA for our fine art fix, but was New York better before Disney fixed up Times Square and before the lower east side was a desirable place to live?  Perhaps I look at 80s-90s New York City through rose colored lenses, my only knowledge from the stories I’ve heard and the books I’ve read (and the rock-opras I’ve seen) but, to me, New York just seemed so much more charming before every music venue was turned into an Urban Outfitters or Whole Foods, or when Andy Warhol and Lou Reed can be found remolding the art world.
